A Windy Year With A Sustainable Success 11 November 2024 Whilst wet and windy weather might not seem ideal for ice cream sales, Mackie’s of Scotland bucked the trend with a record-breaking year for both ice cream sales and renewable energy generation. During the last financial year (June 2023 – May 2024), Mackie’s produced a massive 10 million kWh of green energy from our diverse renewable energy portfolio, including four wind turbines, a bio-mass energy plant, and a 10-acre solar farm. The energy generated over this period was a record figure for our Aberdeenshire farm. This impressive feat not only powered our ice cream and chocolate production, but also allowed us to export a 7.5 million kWh back into the national grid. That’s enough power for an average of 41,000 homes for one month. This achievement is not only important in contributing to Mackie’s own sustainable goals but also supports Scotland’s national drive towards sustainability. We have a longstanding commitment to sustainability across all of our operations. This fantastic result comes after Mackie’s has invested more than £6.5 million in renewable energy infrastructure at the family farm over the past decade. Stuart Common, our Managing Director said: “Renewable energy has been central to our ethos of producing world-class ice cream and chocolate with minimal impact on the environment. “An underlying goal of farming and family businesses is to pass things on in a better state than you found them, and renewable energy has long been an important part of that vision at Mackie’s. “Looking to the future, we’re keen to explore additional ways to integrate sustainable practices into everything we do, from developing our products to how we operate.” Our 10-acre solar farm
