Mackie’s Scoop Prize at Scotland Food & Drink Awards 11 September 2023 We were delighted to have successfully received the Sustainability Award at the recent Food & Drink Excellence Awards in Edinburgh, as food and drink businesses from across the country came together to celebrate the nation’s great produce and achievements. The win was in recognition for our innovation, reflected most recently by the installation of one of Europe’s most efficient low carbon refrigeration systems. The completion of this in 2022 means we’re now using sustainable energy sources to cool our ice cream and store it. It’s an innovative mix of technology and a first for Scotland, combining an ammonia plant and an absorption chiller to “cool with heat” from a new biomass boiler. Kirstin McNutt, Product Development Director, was there to collect the award on behalf of Mackie’s and of the award said, ‘This is such a great achievement for Mackie’ and all the team. We are consistently looking at new ways to achieve our goal of becoming self-sufficient in renewable energy and to be recognise for the effort and investment we have put behind this is wonderful.” Held at the EICC, and hosted by TV personality and award-winning Maître d’hôtel and General Manager of the Michelin-starred restaurant Galvin at Windows, Fred Sirieix, the awards ceremony saw businesses and individuals from across Scotland recognise the highest quality of produce we as a nation have to offer. Iain Baxter, Chief Executive at Scotland Food & Drink, said: “The Excellence Awards highlights the commitment and passion of the industry to preserve and adapt through some of the most difficult times. The calibre of entries this year demonstrates the resilience and the entrepreneurial spirit of our industry is driving innovation and truly excellent products.”
